La Plata
Following silver discoveries in 1862, the townsite of La Plata was established in 1863 at the convergence of La Plata and Silver Wave Canyons. From 1864 until 1868, it was Churchill County's 2nd County Seat (before it moved to Stillwater). A post office operated here from April 13, 1865 until November 25, 1867. Mines in the area were never incredibly fruitful, and the town dissolved before 1870.
According to some authors, a 10-stamp mill was erected at La Plata by the Silver Wave Mining Co. in 1864. However, old timers from the area claim that there was never a mill at La Plata and ore was hauled to the mill in Elevenmile Canyon.
