Friday's Station
In March 1860, Martin K. 'Friday' Burke and James Washington Small acquired 320 acres along the southern shore of Lake Tahoe and built a new station what would become the junction point of the Lake Bigler Toll Road and the Kingsbury Grade. Soon, the Pony Express was granted free passage over the Kingsbury & McDonald Toll Road, and Friday's Station became a stop along that route. Though the Pony Express ceased in 1861, Burke and Small continued to conduct business together until 1871 when they divided the land; Small's parcel would include the station.
In 1888, John Wales Averill purchased the old station property from the Small family and renamed the land "Edgewood". Nine years later, Averill's widow sold Edgewood to David Brooks Park, who operated a large cattle business. Edgewood served as the Park family's summer headquarters until the 1960s, and even today remains in the family. Still standing, Friday's Station is the only intact Pony Express Station remaining in Nevada.
