Lamoille Canyon Powerhouse
In 1912, the Elko-Lamoille Power Company was organized and construction undertaken on a powerhouse near the mouth of Lamoille Canyon. Powerlines were strung to Elko in 1913, followed by Lamoille the following year. At the top of the three-mile flume which fed the power house, a cabin was built for the watermaster, a position held by French immigrant Pete Arcemis. In 1944 the flume was rebuilt, and in 1956 a steel pipeline replaced it.
In 1946, World War II veteran John Byers, Sr. moved with his family to Lamoille Canyon to operate the powerhouse. The family remained until the powerhouse was destroyed by fire in November 1971; they moved on by the following summer. Only concrete foundations remain of the powerhouse and associated buildings, and any remnants of the flume were likely lost to wildfire in 2018.
